An imposing medieval structure that towers over the beautiful hills that punctuate Barberino's surroundings, it was once part of a larger defensive system. Built of stone, the tower stands out for its rugged architecture, characterized by thick walls, narrow windows and loopholes used for surveillance. Originally built to protect and control the surrounding territory, the Chito Tower is now an important historical landmark.
It was built on the border between the Sienese and Florentine domains so that Siena could keep an eye on the activities of the Florentine-influenced Barberino castle.
Pervaded by history and legend, it is said that the ghost of Chito, after whom the tower is named, still hovers in the vicinity; born Giambattista Chiti, a brusque and rude man with the worry of enforcing the boundaries of his property, was violently murdered, since then his damned soul intends to frighten passersby who do not respect the boundaries.
The Chito Tower offers a fascinating glimpse into the medieval past, reflecting the political and social traditions and dynamics of the medieval period.
