The Church of St. Andrew in Vico d'Elsa

Fascinating neo-Gothic place of worship that stands in the charming village of Vico d'Elsa.

Built in the 14th century, the church is dedicated to St. Andrew, the apostle who, according to tradition, preached in Asia Minor and was crucified on an X-shaped cross.

The church's brick exterior features an elegant gabled façade with a sober portal, arched battlements, and a small rose window that illuminates the interior. Its present neo-Gothic appearance is the result of no less than two renovations, one in the 1600s and the other in 1934, the last remodeling of which saw the construction of the quadrangular bell tower that towers to the left of the church.

Inside, the church of St. Andrew features a single nave culminating in a semicircular apse. The interior is enriched by fine artistic elements, including a high altar illuminated by three ornate stained glass windows and several paintings that tell of the centuries-long devotion that has animated this place of worship.

The church is exposed on the village square of the same name, a lovely balcony square overlooking an idyllic landscape, nestled in the hills among the vineyards and olive groves of the Elsa Valley.
