The Church of Santa Maria in Marcialla

Between Barberino and Certaldo, a treasure chest of art and spirituality that holds Renaissance works.

The ancient castle of Marcialla, which dates back to the 13th century and was a satellite of the Florentine authority, saw an Augustinian convent with its church built within its complex in 1383 on the authorization of the City of Lily. The church, dedicated to Mary, became a parish in the 15th century.

Internally renovated in the 18th century, the building has a nave with transept. Space that according to some documents from the 17th century, houses a Pieta attributable to the greatest artist of all time, Michelangelo Buonarroti; an authorship widely debated even in the present day.

The church also preserves numerous Florentine Renaissance frescoes, including theAscension and theAnnunciation by Filippo di Antonio Filippelli. On the main altar is a Crucifix wooden crucifix from the 17th century and a Nativity by Tommaso di Stefano Lunetti, while in the adjacent Oratory of the Confraternity of St. Anthony Abbot one can admire works dedicated to Saint Sebastian and to Saint Roch, frescoes also by Lunetti.
