The Church of St. Bartholomew

Architectural gem in neo-Gothic style, spiritual reference of Barberino Val d'Elsa

Its stone facade, with its austere and imposing appearance, stands proudly from its surroundings, punctuated by the sinuous hills that open up in front of its portal and the graceful narrow streets of the historic village center behind it.

The Church of San Bartolomeo is the main religious building in Barberino Val d'Elsa; it has roots in ancient times but its neo-Gothic appearance is the result of restorations carried out during the 20th century by Tuscan architect Giuseppe Castellucci. Inside, in addition to a partially preserved fresco dating from the 14th century depicting the Annunciation, there is a painted panel depicting the Madonna and Child by the Master of Barberino dating from the 14th century. In the right aisle, an altar is dedicated to the body of Blessed Davanzato, a country parish priest born around 1200, trained by the Vallombrosan monks of Badia a Passignano. With an ascetic and solitary personality, the spirituality of Barberino Val d'Elsa is linked to him.
