The Church of St. Stephen in Linari

A corner of history and spirituality, nestled in the picturesque Barberino countryside.

A religious jewel guarded by Linari's ancient semiabited complex, the Church of St. Stephen enchants with its charm and historical significance.

Located just outside Linari Castle, it has medieval origins and was part of Semifonte's zone of influence.

It was badly damaged during the battles between Ghibellines and Guelphs held between 1260 and 1266. Linari's strategic location along ancient communication routes meant that it was an important landmark for pilgrims and wayfarers with several dispensaries to accommodate them. Although some prosperity the village had between the 13th and 14th centuries, the church, lacking a stable priest, fell into disrepair and was later restored in the 1600s in the Baroque style. In 1930, the original medieval structure was unearthed and the Baroque additions removed.

Despite its small size, it is a charming rural place of worship and the custodian of some sacred art treasures, including a Madonna and Child by Renaissance painter Neri di Bicci.

Adjacent to the main religious building is the oratory dedicated to St. Charles Borromeo, who, according to local folklore, is said to have found hospitality in the church of Linari.
