The Church of Santa Lucia al Borghetto

One of the leading examples of Chianti Gothic architecture, custodian of important works of sacred art.

Part of the diocese of Florence, the Church of Santa Lucia al Borghetto stands on the edge of the village of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, overlooking the beautiful landscapes of Chianti. Its history presumably begins after the visit of St. Francis of Assisi in 1220, although the earliest documentation dates back to 1278, when Countess Beatrice donated 25 lire to the friars of Borghetto.

The Gothic-style architecture of the church features a single wide nave, while the façade, renovated in neo-Gothic style in the early 20th century, has a portal surmounted by a 14th-century frescoed lunette depicting the Madonna and Child between two angels and a 14th-century funerary epigraph of the Gherardini family. Its interior, restored in the early 20th century, contains frescoes from the second half of the 14th century by the Master of the Annunciation of the Legnaioli, as well as the Christ Crucified on panel that adorns the right wall. The high altar, on the other hand, houses a Crucifix wooden crucifix from the 15th century, while the chapel of the Assumption is enriched by the work dated 1471 by Neri di Bicci, theAnnunciation.
