Tavarnelle Val di Pesa

The ancient "tavern" of Chianti, amid history, folklore and unique landscapes.

Surrounded by hills covered with vineyards and olive groves and woods, Tavarnelle represents a perfect synthesis of unspoiled nature and historical-cultural heritage. The village owes its name to the ancient taverns known in ancient times as "Horton's," which, along the Via Cassia, offered refreshment to wayfarers since the Middle Ages. This historic position of passage has enriched Tavarnelle with a tradition of hospitality with testimonies still visible today, such as the Ortone Entrance used to refresh horses, the building known as the Covona that provided services referable to those of a hotel, as well as the one located in the nearby hamlet of Marcialla.

Walking through the historic center, one can admire stone and brick buildings that bear witness to the village's medieval past, with the Church of Santa Lucia al Borghetto standing out for its simple Romanesque elegance. Just a short walk from the center, the Pieve di San Pietro in Bossolo, with its bell tower dominating the landscape, offers an extraordinary example of Romanesque architecture, preserving precious frescoes and sacred artworks.

Tavarnelle is also a place rich in culture and traditions. Throughout the year, the village and its surroundings host numerous events that celebrate local excellence, such as Chianti wine, extra virgin olive oil, and Tuscan cuisine. Festivals, folk festivals, and art events create a lively and welcoming atmosphere that attracts visitors from all over the world.
